Victorian town house garden in a conservation area

… have been busy working on some new design projects, here is one of them, a long thin garden in the ashburnham conservation area.  A new extenstion will be added to the house, and the garden will be landscaped at the same time.  The design disguises the long thin shape of the  plot, and provides a secluded seating area in the sunny corner at the end of the garden.  This garden will be a little green oasis, tranquil and a great sanctuary for it’s owners. See some of our other small gardens http://www.catherineclancy.com/projects.php
Here are 2 photos of what the garden looks like now, before work starts on the garden and the extension

I visited the walled garden at Scampston North yorkshire at the weekend, and its worth a visit if you are ever in the area.  The silent garden and the grass garden were the most peaceful enclosed spaces that i have been in for a while. Beautiful inspired planting. This is a photo from the webiste.

Are these weeds or wildflowers?

Its a fact… weeds are in… evident in some of the gardens at chelsea flower show in May this year… what is one mans weed is another wild flower or garden flower…

Clients happy testimonial…. “We moved into a victorian terraced house in late summer 2011. It has a lovely long south-facing garden and although the hard landscaping had already  been done (path, patios)  and a lawn laid ,there was very little  planting in the two west and east facing borders. We’d been without a garden for four years and were really keen to have something lovely to sit in , look at and enjoy as soon as we could.I found Catherine’s website, loved what I saw and asked her if she could create something lovely for us.And she did just that and more.Discussing the design, the effect, the feel and the plants for the borders with her was really enjoyable as was the actual planting in late April.Catherine transformed our garden ,we are totally in love with it and have absolutely no hesitation in recommending her.”

I spent a few hours last week tyding up this little garden which we designed in March this year… weeding, trimming, dead heading, feeding, planting bedding and I took some photos once I had finished. The garden is settling in nicely, even after just 6 months. It is so important to regularly maintain the garden regularly, especially as this garden is so visible from the open plan living space.

Came back later in the evening and took some night photos, the lights and waterfall create such a lovely atmosphere at night.

What did you think of the wild flower planting at the olympic park site?  I was lucky enough to get a ticket to the stadium, and had time to take in the lovely landscaping around the park. It has inspired me to use more wild flower planting schemes in my garden designs

IMG_1290The Savill Garden is one of Britain’s greatest ornamental gardens, a lovely place to visit. Even though the car park was full to the brim of cars, the garden seemed empty when walking around the 35 acres of contemporary and classically designed gardens and exotic woodland.  It is very much a garden for a gardens sake, and a great place to walk around if you are an enthusiastic horticulturalist or just enjoy being in a lovely green space.  It was created in the 1930s by Sir Eric Savill, under the patronage of the king. It began as a woodland garden, with native oak, beech and sweet chestnut trees, but has since evolved by incorporating many new plants over the years.  The garden has something for every part of the year…. the Spring Wood, The Summer Wood, IMG_1318The Hidden Gardens, The Summer Gardens, The Glades , Autumn Wood, The Azalea Walks and The New Zealand Garden.  The Summer Gardens look pretty amazing at the moment, as does the Golden Jubilee garden. This garden was created by the French painter Jacques Majorelle in the 1920’s and the the blue colour used throughout the garden has been patened… Marjorelle blue.  Marjorelle also collected plants,  and the resulting garden is extraordinary, water is a very important feature throughout, it has marble pools, banana trees, fab succulents, groves of bamboo, coconut palms and bougainvilleas.  After years of neglect, the garden was then taken over and restored by the fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre BergeMarjorelle potsMarjorelle blueMarjorelle blue potMarjorelle blue houseLily pond

Work will begin next year on a 400m long, 24m high sculpture of a woman lying down, in a new public park next to Shotton mine in Northumberland, and will cost 2.5M. The 1.5M tonnes of soil from the mine will form the “green goddess”. It will take about a year to build.

Charles Jencks is a leading figure in British Landscape Architecture. He created the Garden of Cosmic Speculation in his private garden at Portrack, Dumfries,  I visited it last year on its one open day per year, it was amazing, and I cant wait to see the green goodess.
